What type of solar system is right for you?

The right solar configuration depends on your property, how much electricity you use, when you use it and what you want your solar system to achieve.
A grid-connected solar system generates electricity for your home or business while remaining connected to the electricity grid. Your property can use the solar electricity as it is generated, with surplus electricity able to be exported to the grid depending on your setup and electricity retailer.
Battery storage can provide another option, storing surplus solar electricity generated during the day so it can potentially be used later when your panels aren't producing as much power.
There are also hybrid and off-grid solar configurations available within the wider solar market. If you have particular requirements around battery storage, backup power or greater energy independence, talk to Whitburn Electrical about what you want to achieve and the options available for your property.

  • Long-term benefits – Generating your own solar power can reduce the amount of electricity you need to purchase from the grid and help protect your household or business from rising electricity costs over the longer term.

Our solar installation process

1. Consultation and assessment

- We start by discussing your energy needs and assessing your property. This allows us to determine what type and size of solar system may be appropriate and provide a detailed proposal.

2. System design

- Based on the assessment, we design a solar system around your requirements and property. Quality components are selected with performance and longevity in mind.

3. Installation

- Whitburn Electrical takes care of the solar installation, including mounting the panels, electrical wiring and integration of the system with your property's electrical supply.

4. Testing and commissioning

- Once installation is complete, the system is tested and commissioned to make sure it is operating safely and correctly. You'll also receive the relevant documentation and information you need to operate your new solar system.

5. Ongoing support

- Our involvement doesn't have to finish once the panels are on the roof. Whitburn Electrical provides ongoing support and maintenance to help keep your solar system performing as it should.

Getting the size of your solar system right

More solar panels aren't automatically better. A good solar design starts with understanding how much electricity you use and when you use it.
Your roof space, orientation, shading and available sunlight also influence the design and potential performance of a solar installation. Whitburn Electrical assesses your property and energy requirements before designing a system suited to your situation.
This helps ensure you're investing in a solar installation that makes sense for your home or business rather than simply fitting as many panels as the roof will hold.

Solar for homes, rural properties and businesses

Solar isn't limited to homes - Whitburn Electrical installs solar systems for business premises and rural properties too. For businesses with significant electricity use during daylight hours, generating power while the business is operating can make solar particularly worth investigating. For rural properties, the right system will depend on energy use, the property and what you want to achieve from your investment.
Not sure what size system you need or whether solar is worthwhile for your property? Talk to Whitburn Electrical first. We can assess your requirements, explain the options and provide a solar solution designed around your home or business.

Frequently asked questions about residential electrical work

Yes - it's worth considering the age and condition of your roof first. Solar panels can remain in place for decades, so if significant roofing work is likely to be needed in the foreseeable future, it can make sense to complete that before installing the panels. EECA specifically recommends dealing with roofs likely to need replacement or major maintenance within the next 10 years before going solar.

A standard grid-connected solar system will generally shut down during a power outage for safety reasons, even when the sun is shining. Having solar panels alone therefore doesn't necessarily give you backup power; this requires a system specifically designed with suitable battery storage and backup capability.

Potentially, yes. If you think your electricity needs may increase in the future, perhaps because you're planning to buy an EV, add a spa pool or make other changes to your home, it's worth discussing this when your original system is designed.

North-facing panels generally offer the highest overall solar generation in New Zealand, but that doesn't mean another roof orientation rules solar out. East or west-facing panels can also be useful, particularly when their generation better matches when a household uses electricity. The property needs to be assessed as a whole, including orientation, roof pitch and shading.

Solar panels have no moving parts and generally require relatively little maintenance, but they should still be checked and kept clean so dirt and debris don't unnecessarily affect their performance. Your inverter and overall system performance should also be monitored over the life of the installation.
